The story of the season...
Kentucky's growing season runs long and generous — limestone-rich ground, warm Ohio Valley summers, and a first frost that holds off into October. The heart of it is the Bluegrass, where the same black dirt that grows the pastures behind the horse farms grows some of the best sweet corn and tomatoes in the country. Start in Paris, in Bourbon County: the Paris-Bourbon County Farmers' Market keeps a real storefront open on High Street all week — Monday through Saturday, not just market day — with sixty-some local producers behind free-range eggs, local honey, quality meats, and whatever's ripe.
Eighteen miles southwest, Lexington runs the region's flagship. The Lexington Farmers' Market sets up Saturdays from 8 to 2 under the Fifth Third Pavilion on Main Street, with Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday markets scattered across town the rest of the week. Nearby, the Bluegrass Farmers' Market holds the line on a single rule — 100% homegrown and homemade, every vendor grew it or made it, no resellers.
The ring towns each keep their own. Georgetown's Scott County market runs Saturday mornings downtown through late September. West in Versailles, the Woodford County Farmers' Market goes twice a week — Saturday mornings and Wednesday afternoons — with a Monday sister-market over in Midway. East in Winchester, the Clark County market opens Saturdays on Depot Street from May into the fall, and north in Cynthiana, the Harrison County growers gather Saturday mornings at Flat Run Veterans Park.
The calendar tells you what to expect on the tables. Strawberries in May. Then the long Kentucky summer: Silver Queen sweet corn knee-high by the Fourth and picked by the dozen through August, beefsteak and heirloom tomatoes, peaches and early apples off the u-pick orchards around Georgetown and Versailles, beans, squash, and more okra than you'll know what to do with. Come fall the sorghum gets pressed and boiled down the old way, the country hams hang to cure, the pumpkins and winter squash come in, and Kentucky's grass-fed beef — this is the biggest cattle state east of the Mississippi — fills the freezers.
Down in the capital, Frankfort's Franklin County market is producer-only — Tuesdays and Saturdays in season, with a Thursday online-order pickup and a "Farm to Frankfort" delivery run for the weeks you can't make it. South in Richmond, the Madison County market spreads across the week, including a stand at Eastern Kentucky University. Most of these markets fold their tents by November, but the farms behind them don't stop — the eggs keep coming, the cattle keep grazing, the greenhouses keep cutting greens.
That's where LiveStalks Local comes in. The same farmers you'd meet on a Saturday morning take orders the rest of the week now too — picked the morning of pickup and waiting for you at the farm down the pike. Grown Local... Sold Local... seven days a week, not just market day.
Market days and seasons researched against the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, Kentucky Proud, and the Paris–Bourbon County, Lexington, and county market sites. Verify with the market before driving — schedules shift season to season.
Limestone water, bluegrass pastures, and a farm down every pike.
